In an alternative Dublin a wealthy young Muslim, scion of an industrial family, has a life-changing encounter with a prostitute, in a story based on the model of mediaeval love songs. In a world overtaken by ice and snow, a child queen battles bears and takes wolves as her allies to win freedom for her people. For reader safety, these stories should be taken one at a time, like capsules of wonder.

This is a stunning collection of stories by a master-crafts-woman of the written word. What I love about Lucille's writing is the breadth of human experience that it encompasses. Where you or I might fear to go as writers, she rolls up her sleeves and pitches in, writing with authority about all sorts of alien cultures, real and imaginary. This collection of stories - many previously published - includes contemporary stories alongside tales set in the early twentieth century, an alternative (Muslim) Ireland, and a fantastic undersea society. "Water and Wolf", for example, is a charming story about a young woman who not only survives the most severe hardships, but triumphs over her enemies - a kickass heroine of pre-history. "Fish" is my personal favorite, although "Love" comes a close second. Highly recommended. Watch out for more from this talented writer/journalist/editor.Product details

The stories in this wonderful collection are heartbreaking, chilling or playful, all threaded with tremendous authority and wisdom. My favourite is `Fish', which features the occupants of a kitchen aquarium on a doomed ocean liner "Later, as the ship's electric lights continued to burn below the sea, the fish swam away. They could not hear the roar like the sound of a football crowd which rose from the people in the water ..." That's just one example of Lucille Redmond's powerful and haunting economy of style - she doesn't waste a single word. This collection repays careful reading; these stories will stay with you. Highly recommended.
